Situated on 200 acres of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya, is the original hideaway steeped in tradition and nature. Constructed to “align with the sacred geometry of Mayan masons” and surrounded by dense jungle and white sand beaches, the resort recently reopened its doors after an extensive renovation helmed by Tara Bernerd and Partners.
Inspired by vernacular materials, ancient rituals and the Belmond slow-luxury philosophy, the acclaimed design studio has reimagined the hotel’s interiors—spanning four dining spaces, an indoor-outdoor spa and 72 rooms and suites—to bring calm, clarity and craftsmanship to the fore. Naturally, they chose AXOR for the bathrooms.
Vibrant yet grounded, Bernerd’s interior design is defined by natural, local materials in earth tones—dark wood, tessellated tile and soft plaster—enlivened by invigorating splashes of yellow, green and blue. Linen fittings, rattan chairs and lush greenery add a sense of warmth and detail. Characteristically Mexican, Bernerd’s design stays true to the Maroma’s roots while introducing a sense of minimalism that makes each space feel modern, graceful and welcoming.
With four bedrooms, sweeping ocean views and a private swimming pool, the Villa Maroma represents the hotel’s vision of hospitality at its most expansive and intimate. Hand-carved armchairs, sweeping thatched-roof ceilings and a lush palette of textiles define the common spaces. The bathroom expands on this convivial atmosphere with a palette of terracotta tilling, soothing greens and marble.
In the bathroom, Bernerd complements the Villa’s tactile design through a curated selection of AXOR Montreux fixtures: a 2-handle bath mixer floor-standing for exposed installation fills the bath, ornate 3-hole mixers adorn the basins, and a 240 1-jet overhead shower and hand shower service the shower. A range of accessories from the collection rounds out the space. Timelessly elegant, AXOR Montreux brings a sense of rich detail and tradition to the space, its Brushed Nickel Finish complementing the room’s palette with its radiant luster.
Maroma stands out for its focus on immersive experiences—cultural, natural, and deeply personal. Whether through its reverence for Mayan heritage, its connection to jungle and sea, or the quiet rituals enacted within its spa and suites, the resort invites guests to slow down and reconnect. In the bathrooms, AXOR Montreux becomes part of this narrative, its balance of traditional craftsmanship and elegance reinforcing a philosophy rooted in heritage and modern refinement. The result is a retreat that offers a rare kind of luxury—slow, thoughtful and woven into its surroundings.
