About Philippe Starck

One of today's best-known designers and architects, a top international creative star and a free spirit, who loves to use his unconventional style to take us by surprise or even to provoke us.

Not only does Axor appreciate the design abilities of the most ingenious designer of our time, but also his visions of a better world: Time and again, he succeeds in touching people and making them think. Because ultimately, Philippe Starck wants to create something good rather than something beautiful in his objects.

Axor and Starck kicked off their collaboration in 1994 by revolutionising the bathroom. The Salon D'Eau characterised the bathroom of the future. Since then, Philippe Starck has created several sensational bathroom products for Axor.

The French extrovert has designed just about everything, from café chairs to toothbrushes, from motorbikes to mega-yachts. Even the hotels designed by him have attained cult status.

As a responsible global citizen, he promotes sustainable projects time and again: whether this involves a wind turbine for the home, a solar-powered boat or a hydrogen-powered car.

Philippe Starck was born in 1945 in Paris, the son of an aircraft engineer. He began his career designing furniture for major Italian and international brands. He became famous when he was commissioned to furnish the private rooms of the former French President François Mitterrand in the Elysée Palace. In 1997 he established the Büro Starck. In 2000 he received the French National Order of the Legion for his achievements – one of numerous coveted distinctions which he has been awarded over the course of his 30-year career.

The first modern bathroom/living space

Rustic bathroom with free-standing bath tub
Single lever basin mixer with joystick handle

Philippe Starck designed an extraordinary mixer for the Salon D'Eau. It cites the source of the water flow: the minimalist mixer, which resembles a water pump, is now regarded as a classic in modern bathrooms.

Pioneering: the "joystick", an eye-catching operating lever.

"What a pity that we can never see the beauty of the water in the mixer." Klaus Grohe's wish was the starting point for once again commissioning Philippe Starck with an exclusive mixer project.

This eventually resulted in the creation of a glass mixer in Starck's typical minimalist design, which turns the water vortex, this spectacle of nature, into something we can both see and comprehend.

Organic and minimalist

"I like to open the doors to people's brains." Out of respect for the earth, an intelligent operating concept was developed which facilitates the economical use of water resources.

The matching design is characterised by organic minimalism, and is powerful and sculptural.

Maximum minimalism

The second bathroom furnishing developed for Axor by Starck takes the minimalist design concept to another dimension: the Axor Starck X collection is sculptural, plays with symmetries and features clear geometry.

Customised solution for the shower

Axor enlisted the services of Philippe Starck as its design partner for the first Axor shower collection. The Axor ShowerCollection not only complements the basin mixers designed by Starck, but also all the other bathroom collections too.

Under the motto "Just mix it", the extensive shower range is modular in design to facilitate customised and striking shower solutions.
